Ketamine has shown potential as a rapid-acting treatment for mental health and other mentioned disorders compared to traditional medications. Some patients may experience improvement within 24 hours of treatment, and after multiple sessions, many patients observe lasting benefits.
On average, 2 out of 3 people will benefit from Ketamine infusions. The success rate is reported as high as 70-80%, reflecting a much higher percentage than treatment with conventional medicine alone.
Ketamine is a medication that has been used historically as an anesthetic. However, in recent years, it has gained attention for its off-label use in low doses as a potential treatment option for various conditions, including depression, anxiety, and chronic pain syndromes.
Research indicates that ketamine may promote the regrowth of synapses in the brain, which could potentially help modify the neural pathways associated with these conditions. Some studies have reported success rates of around 75% with ketamine treatments.
In your initial consultation, we review your medical and mental health history, discuss what you hope to achieve through the treatment, and explain the procedure's benefits and risks. During this time, we answer any questions you may have to ensure that you are fully informed and comfortable.
During a treatment session, you will be seated in our cozy lounge chairs. Before the IV begins, patients talk to Dr. Escamilla about their goals for the session. We provide headphones and blankets so you can listen to music and relax as you receive treatment. The infusion takes around 45 minutes to complete. The session ends with recovery time and debriefing with Dr. Escamilla - talking about your experience and making plans to attend therapy in the days following.
Here's what to expect as a ketamine therapy patient.
All new patients begin with an intake consultation. In this complimentary session, Dr. Escamilla reviews the patient's medical and mental health history, talks with the patient about their goals for treatment, and determines whether or not ketamine therapy is an appropriate course of action.
Research has shown that an initial course of 6 IV treatments is most effective for mood disorders, completed in a timeframe of 2-6 weeks, depending on the patient's schedule. Each session begins with setting intentions for the treatment, followed by the IV ketamine infusion, and talk therapy with Dr. Escamilla after the infusion to help process thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
Many patients will see marked improvement of symptoms during and after the initial 6 treatments. Separate from the treatments, we require all of our patients to actively attend counseling between ketamine sessions in order for the medication to be as effective as possible. Patients may come back for a "booster" IV treatment once every 3 to 6 months to maintain lasting benefits.
Dr. Escamilla provides talk therapy before and after the ketamine treatment session. In order to maximize the potential for a lasting, positive change in your mental health, we require all our patients to actively engage in therapy between sessions outside of our clinic. If you have yet to find a counselor, we will provide you with several recommendations for both local and telehealth providers.

Ketamine is a medication that has been used for over 50 years in anesthesia and pain management. More recently, it has been found to have rapid-acting effects on severe depression and anxiety when administered in lower doses. Ketamine is administered intravenously under the direct supervision of a doctor.
Ketamine operates differently from traditional mood disorder treatments. Rather than primarily affecting the serotonin or norepinephrine pathways in the brain, ketamine interacts with the glutamate system, a key player in mood regulation.
This interaction with the glutamate system promotes the formation of new neural connections in the brain, potentially contributing to its therapeutic effects.
For mood disorder treatments, a single ketamine infusion starts at $350. Costs for chronic pain treatments may differ as they are tailored to the specific condition.
Please contact our clinic directly for more specific pricing details and financing options. We aim to make treatments as affordable and accessible as possible for all our patients.
Insurance does not typically cover ketamine treatments for mental health conditions or chronic pain because it is considered 'off-label' use.
However, some insurance companies may cover part of the costs depending on the specific plan and diagnosis. Therefore, it's essential to contact your insurance provider directly to get the most accurate information regarding coverage for ketamine treatments.
Yes, you may be able to use funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to cover the cost of ketamine treatments. However, the eligibility depends on the specific guidelines of your HSA or FSA plan and often requires that the treatment be deemed a medical necessity.
A letter of medical necessity from your healthcare provider may be needed. We recommend checking with your plan administrator to understand your coverage better. Please feel free to contact us if you need further assistance with this process.
Ketamine treatment protocols vary based on the specific condition and the provider's recommendation. Generally, for conditions like depression and anxiety, a series of six infusions over a two to three-week period is often recommended.
Each infusion typically lasts about 40 to 60 minutes with another 30-40 minutes for pre-infusion preparation and post-infusion recovery. After the initial series, maintenance or "booster" infusions may be scheduled as needed, typically every few months, depending on the individual's response.
Ketamine Infusion Therapy may cause some side effects, but they are usually mild and short-lived. Common side effects include temporary feelings of dissociation, tiredness, dizziness, and nausea. These symptoms typically go away within a few hours after the treatment.
